The St John’s U15 boys’ 2019-20 rugby season was hugely successful, with the team triumphant in 14 of their 19 fixtures. The team won against several strong opponents including Brighton College (27-21), RGS Guildford (15-7) and Eastbourne College (21-14).
A busy season saw the team enter the England Rugby National Vase Competition and successfully progress to the final stages of the competition, with the entire school brimming with excitement for the final at Twickenham in March. The team enjoyed progressing their way through the competition, which included travelling down to Torquay for an overnight stay in preparation for the quarter-final match which resulted in a convincing 32-7 win against Torquay Boys’ Grammar School. The team then went into the semi-final hosting St Lawrence College, Kent, and in a close battle came out on top with a 10-3 victory.
Unfortunately, due to Covid 19, as with many events this year, the final at Twickenham in March 2020 was unable to go ahead. We are delighted to announce that the team have recently been awarded a joint winners’ trophy, alongside Northampton School for Boys.
The U15A coach, Mr Metcalfe, commented: ‘I am extremely pleased with how the boys performed throughout the season. They showed determination in a time of adversity and never gave up. Their teamwork was outstanding and every single player in the squad should be hugely proud of their achievements.’
Mr Newby, Director of Rugby commented: ‘The boys played with a huge sense of school pride throughout their campaign in the National Vase Competition. They really made the St John’s community proud. They conducted themselves well and showed the key values that make a great rugby team’
Following the exciting update from England Rugby, we look forward to celebrating the team’s success once the trophy is received.
