Work At St John's
St John's is a special place to work and we are keen to welcome enthusiastic, passionate staff who want to develop their careers in a supportive, vibrant environment. There is something about our school which engenders a deep sense of belonging and community and this is felt across pupils, staff, parents and friends. St John's values its rich heritage but is forward-looking and has always been progressive; we have changed with the times and the needs of the families we educate but our core values of courtesy, respect and tolerance hold true.
This is an exciting time for St John’s. Rowena Cole joined as The Head in September 2017 and is leading the School to new levels of success.
“Passing on a love of learning and an enthusiasm for my subject as well as the fun and excitement of working with young people is why I became a teacher. The pleasure of seeing a pupil suddenly grasp a new topic, or finding a better way to impart a particularly tricky concept has never diminished. Children have untold potential, which will emerge and prosper with the appropriate opportunity and suitable encouragement. I consider it a privilege that, as educators, we have the chance to unlock that potential. St John’s is an amazing place to learn, work, teach and live. Our pupils are a pleasure to be around and our staff are incredibly supportive both to pupils and towards each other – there is a real warmth in the relationships here. I live on site with my husband, two children and our many pets and I understand the importance of balancing family and work; we work hard to achieve the stunning outcomes that our pupils deserve but we believe that everyone is more effective and happier when there is a sense of balance in life."

We are a co-educational school for over 800 boys and girls aged 11 to 18 and are predominantly a day school (75% day, 25% boarding) but have an innovative boarding offering which includes weekly, flexi or ad hoc options to create the best possible balance between home and school life for busy families.
Our academic staff body is actively involved in developing creative and sophisticated teaching and learning practices through regular CPD, self-reflection and peer observations. Class sizes are small, our staff support is first-rate and the high standards set in the classroom reflect in excellent public examination results. We are firm believers that academic results are not the only measure of a successful education and our rounded approach aims to create open-minded, thoughtful, confident and happy young men and women who will go on to have productive, positive experiences in higher education and their adult lives. Our support staff are integral to the wider success of the School. They are highly skilled professionals whose expertise allows the School to function effectively across functions as diverse as estates, operations, communications, catering, pastoral care, IT, finance and HR.
Set in the beautiful Surrey countryside, the School’s 50-acre campus is a short stroll into Leatherhead town centre and just 45 minutes by train to the cultural attractions of nearby London. It has excellent transport links by road, rail and nearby airports Heathrow and Gatwick. We are fortunate to have an impressive campus with a stunning mix of mid Victorian architecture and purpose-built contemporary additions.
We value all our staff and believe that attracting and retaining the very best people is fundamental to allowing us to take St John's forward. We boast a competitive salary structure and offer other benefits including a pension scheme, fee reduction for staff children, an employee support and benefits programme, a ride to work and childcare voucher scheme, free lunch during term time, opportunities for professional development and access to sports facilities.
