Sport is a cornerstone of life at St John’s.  We’re proud of the strength of our sporting reputation, both for the competitive success of our teams and for the breadth of sports we offer.

We are passionate about the benefits of sport for young people and our aim is to give every child access to high quality coaching, outstanding facilities, and a breadth of sports; no matter their sporting preference or ability, we want every St John’s pupil to achieve their full potential.

The enthusiasm for sport at St John’s is widespread and every child who wishes to has the chance to represent the School in a major sport.

Respect, enjoyment, humility and growth are our sporting values.

Sports Facilities

We are fortunate to have outstanding facilities on our 50-acre site at St John’s.  The most recent addition is a state-of-the-art 25m swimming pool and sports centre, incorporating a fitness suite and studio.  Pupils also benefit from nine rugby/football pitches, two astroturf pitches, six netball courts, four cricket squares, five hard tennis courts and 24 synthetic courts (in summer), and an athletics track.

Coaching and Training

Pupils’ weekly sports sessions are delivered by highly qualified staff and a team of skilled professional coaches. One session concentrates on physical literacy and sees pupils move through a carousel of coaching workshops to acquire skills specific to each sports’ development plan. Every pupil, no matter what age or ability level, receives direct contact with specialist coaches every week. Pupils then put the skills developed into practice in an afternoon session, led by their team coach.

Breadth of Opportunity

In addition to the major sports on offer each term, other competitive sports at St John’s include badminton, golf, squash and shooting.  Further extending the opportunities available for health and fitness, recreational activities including conditioning, dance, indoor climbing, off-road cycling, Pilates, rowing, sailing, volleyball and Zumba.

Elite Provision

Pupils with the potential to progress beyond school standard receive a high quality and structured training programme, enabling them to develop the necessary skills in their chosen sport, alongside other key components such as diet and nutrition, conditioning programmes and boosting time management skills. This support is enhanced through a sports scholars’ programme. We are delighted to follow the exciting sporting careers of many former pupils who now compete professionally.
