16+ Admissions

Step 1: Registering and Scholarship Application

When: Closing date is 15 October of Year 11

To be considered for a place to join the Sixth Form at St John’s, registration and payment of £150 registration fee should be made by 15 October of when the child is in Year 11.   By the same date, your child should also submit a CV (which should include interests and predicted GCSE grades) and inform the admissions office which academic subject they would like to interviewed be in.

A reference and predicted grades will be requested from the candidate’s current school.

St John’s offers scholarships to candidates who demonstrate leadership, excellence in their specified field and also possess the potential to further develop in their time at St John’s. Scholarship applications, together with the relevant fee, should be received by 15 October and the assessments take place in the same week as the entry assessments.  Criteria and dates for scholarships are detailed on the Scholarship pages.

Step 2: Assessments

When: Tuesday 9 November 2021

Please note due to Covid 19, we will continually monitor the relevant guidance and our admissions assessment plans are therefore subject to change to keep our community safe. We will inform registered families of any relevant changes.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the admissions team on 01372 373 000 or at

Candidates will be expected to take an online academic assessment (verbal and non-verbal reasoning) and have two interviews. One of the interviews will be with a member of the pastoral team and the other with a head of department in a subject they wish to study at A level and that they have studied at GCSE.

Offers for external applicants are made in early December of the year before entry and are generally unconditional, although we reserve the right to specify one or more required grade in certain cases and for those opting for mathematics and science A levels. Details of the A levels currently offered and the grade requirements can be found in our A level options booklet on the curriculum page of this website

On acceptance of the place offered, an Acceptance Deposit and Fee Deposit, as set out in the Fees section, are payable.

‘We want to say a huge thanks to you and your team for organising such an excellent entrance assessment this morning. It was clearly a monumental amount of work, but your communication was superb. Thank you for making what could have been a very stressful morning as smooth as it could have been. We appreciate it greatly.’

‘I just wanted to say how brilliant I think your assessment has been. It was well-thought-out, the very clear instructions meant my son was relaxed and calm. Thank you to you and the team for really considering the children in this process.’

Step 3: GCSE Examinations

When: August prior to joining Sixth Form

Places are confirmed by St John’s on receipt of GCSE results in August, providing the entry requirements have been met. In certain subjects, pupils will normally be required to have achieved grade 7 and above at GCSE in order to be able to study that subject in the Sixth Form.
