Step 1: Registering and Scholarship Application
When: Closing date is 15 October of Year 11
To be considered for a place, a registration form, CV (which should include interests and predicted GCSE grades) and non-refundable registration fee (£150) should be submitted to the School by 15 October in Year 11.
Candidates should also indicate which specialist subject they would like to be interviewed in. This should be a subject they are taking at GCSE and would like to study at A level. A reference and predicted grades will then be requested from the candidate’s current school.
St John’s offers scholarships to candidates who demonstrate leadership, excellence in their specified field and also possess the potential to further develop in their time at St John’s. Scholarship applications, together with the relevant fee, should be received by 15 October and the assessments take place in the same week as the entry assessments. Criteria and dates for scholarships are detailed on the Scholarship pages.
Step 2: Assessments
When: November of Year 11 (Tuesday 12 November 2019 for 2020 entry)
Selection for entry at 16+ into the Lower Sixth is made on the basis of recommendation from an applicant’s current head and predicted GCSE results. Candidates will also take an online academic assessment (verbal and non-verbal reasoning) and have two interviews, one of which will be in a subject they wish to study at A level. All candidates are asked to submit a CV.
Offers for external applicants are made in early December of the year before entry and are generally unconditional, although we reserve the right to specify one or more required grade in certain cases and for those opting for mathematics and science A levels. Details of the A levels currently offered and the grade requirements can be found in our A level options booklet on the curriculum page of this website.
On acceptance of the place offered, an Acceptance Deposit and Fee Deposit, as set out in the Fees section, are payable.
Step 3: GCSE Examinations
When: August prior to joining Sixth Form
Places are confirmed by St John’s on receipt of GCSE results in August, providing the entry requirements have been met. In certain subjects, pupils will normally be required to have achieved an A grade (or 7 and above) at GCSE level in order to be able to study that subject in the Sixth Form.
