Frosty Mornings and Muddy Boots

Whilst many of us were enjoying the over indulgence of the festive break, St John’s sports pupils were busy whole-heartedly immersing themselves into assault courses, academies, pre-season training and fixtures!

The pre-season programme engaged the entire community, with parents, medical teams, staff and pupils providing great supportive spirit for the term ahead.

A trip to Manchester City Football Club from 2 to 5 January for all Lower School pupils was an excellent opportunity for pupils to learn skills, develop tactics and train with professional support. Every team from St John’s Football Club returned to the pitches in style, with a great number of wins to start 2019, proving the commitment made over the school holidays was worthwhile. Two teams played under the lights against Brighton College at Leatherhead Football Club with two fixtures, seeing U14 gain a 0-0 draw and 1st XI team a 1-0 win. The pupils were pleased to be wearing their ‘Player Tek’ vests, kindly supported by the SJPA Committee.

St John’s netballers competed in pre-season tournaments to prepare for what promises to be a fantastic season ahead. St John’s 1st VII netball team kick-started their season with a fantastic effort, winning 29-25 against Epsom College; the team effort was also evident when the U13A team winning 24-14 against Cranleigh School!

Some dedicated hockey players have been braving the frosty mornings at 7.30am for ‘Thinking Thursdays’! It is a great session exploring and creating new and different ways to score. The boys’ teams have been taking part in fixtures against KCS, Wimbledon, St Mary’s University, Worth and Epsom and are looking forward to playing Eton, Harrow, Mount Kelly and Dulwich over the coming weeks.

Pupils across every sport and team have shown fantastic commitment with dark evenings and freezing temperatures doing nothing to dampen the Eagles spirits. Saturday 19 January saw a record-breaking number of pupils representing the School with over 550 pupils taking part in football, netball and hockey fixtures throughout the day.
