Exciting Futures for Class of 2020

In what has been a strange end to their time at school, St John’s Upper Sixth have today received their A level results in a summer when no public examinations were held.  They missed the usual post-examination celebrations that are the culmination of their time at school, but they have much to celebrate now as they accept places for university and make plans for the next stage of their lives.

Over 20% of the year group achieved straight A*-As and notable successes across the breadth of A level subjects offered at St John’s include 100% A*-B in further mathematics, 90% in history, 83% in English literature and 81% in economics.

Rowena Cole, The Head, comments: “This year group have been a pleasure to have at St John’s – they are intelligent, compassionate, enthusiastic young men and women who have contributed to every facet of school life.  Their final year ended in a way that nobody would have predicted and they responded to these challenges with maturity, resilience and positivity.

The effort that they, and our staff, put into their entire time in Sixth Form will stand them in good stead to seize the opportunities that lie ahead, and we are delighted to celebrate the excellent results of many pupils, which open the door to an array of interesting university places and future careers. Amidst the uncertainty surrounding this year’s A level results grading, there is much to celebrate at St John’s, but we are also frustrated that the hard work and dedication of our pupils and staff has not been universally rewarded. We expect to see further improvements as we challenge those grades that do not reflect the ability of our pupils.

In the meantime, I congratulate the entire year group on the way they have conducted themselves and all that they have achieved throughout their time at school. They will always remain part of the St John’s community and we wish them every success for the future; we know they will go on to do great things.”

Amongst the many successes being celebrated today, Lilia and Amelia achieved straight A*s to secure places to study medicine at Imperial College London and Manchester respectively.  Outgoing School Captain, James, will be going to Oxford to study history, while India will go to Cambridge to study theology and Jamie accepts his place to study Law at Oxford.  Phoebe will be going to Edinburgh to study graphic design, Katy will be studying architecture at Sheffield and Scott has secured a place to study computer science at Warwick. This breadth of courses and destinations demonstrates the rounded educational experience that allows every individual to pursue their passions and ambitions across sciences, the humanities and creative arts.

Congratulations to the Class of 2020 for the example they have set to younger pupils and for the admirable way that they have led the pupil body through this unforgettable school year.
