St John’s in Silicon Valley

During the February half term holiday, a group of Sixth Form pupils travelled to Silicon Valley, San Francisco, to delve into the world of computer science. Pupils enjoyed a vast and interesting itinerary, including visits to the headquarters of international technology firms such as Intel and LinkedIn and enriching cultural experiences such as Alcatraz Island.

Pupils enjoyed learning about the manufacturing process of processor chips during their visit to Intel headquarters. There were plenty of opportunities for pupils to increase their knowledge and understanding of topics relating to their studies during visits to Silicon Valley as well as Stanford University.

One exciting highlight was meeting with a senior engineer at LinkedIn for an insight into the business, and programming as a career. Over the four days pupils enjoyed many visits including the Computer History Museum, NASA exhibits, Apple and Google, all of which were perfect opportunities for pupils to develop and nurture their interests and creativity within the fields of computer science, programming and technology.

In addition to this, the group were also able to enjoy a selection of the cultural aspects within San Francisco, including a visit to Presidio Park to see the Golden Gate Bridge, exploring the well-known Pier 39 and taking the ferry over to Alcatraz Island. This was a worthwhile and jam packed trip with lots on offer and great development and enjoyment opportunities throughout!
