Introducing Hawkins House

Hawkins House is the latest addition to the St John’s family of houses.  A girls’ day house, Hawkins opened its doors at the start of the academic year in September 2019 and its first cohort of girls will play a pivotal role in shaping this exciting new community.

The house system at St John’s is fundamental to the way that pupils experience school life.  They are warm, welcoming, fun places which add to the vibrancy and richness of life at St John’s.  Houses offer a breathing space in the middle of a busy day, are a place to relax with friends and provide opportunities for leadership and responsibility.

In the first full week of term, Hawkins pupils gathered together for a social event of mug painting, which was a huge success and everyone created a mug that related to them.

As with all of the St John’s Houses, we are sure the girls in Hawkins House will find an extreme sense of pride in their house. Taking on Cambridge blue and white as their colours, Hawkins girls will be able to influence the House identity, such as their motto and crest, with their Housemistress, Matron and tutors.

Girls will be given the opportunity to showcase their talents with inter-house competitions, cheer on their peers and make contributions towards life in Hawkins House, giving them a real sense of belonging. Hawkins have started to prepare for their first ever House Singing Competition and the girls have been rehearsing House Unison (where every member of the House is involved).

This new house is named after Reverend Edwards C Hawkins, the headmaster of St John’s from 1861 to 1883 who moved the School to Leatherhead and formed the basis of the School that we recognise today.

This is an exciting time for all at St John’s, none more so than for the inaugural Housemistress of Hawkins, Miss Toloczko and every member of the Hawkins House community. Miss Toloczko said: “It has been my absolute pleasure opening Hawkins this September. The girls have made it a real honour and have already started to make the house a home. Passions and talents are starting to become apparent in the Hawkins community and we are looking forward to competing in the up and coming house events, placing Hawkins firmly on the map.”
