LUNCHTIME RECITAL - MUSICAL THEATRE

We hold a programme of lunchtime recitals during the Autumn Term which offers a number of opportunities to enjoy the variety of musical talent at St John's. Pre-performance refreshments will be provided. Booking is not required for this event.


HERITAGE OPEN DAY

Saturday 21 September 2019, from 1.00pm - 4.00pm. 
Venue: Old Chapel 
Free Admission - No Booking Required

Tours of the School are available at 1.00pm and 3.00pm.

Exhibitions about the history of St John’s School, and the story of the Old Chapel, will be on display on Saturday 21 September as part of the national Heritage Open Days scheme. Discover what it was like to be a pupil here over one hundred years ago and view the illustrated history of the Old Chapel with its historic stained glass windows and memorials. Visitors are also welcome to join a guided tour of St John’s. Find out how and why the School came to be established in Leatherhead in 1872.  See some of the historic buildings and hear about its history, how it was founded in 1851 by the Reverend Ashby Haslewood, vicar of St Mark’s, Hamilton Terrace in St John’s Wood, to offer free education for the sons of poor clergymen.


RICHARD GAUNTLETT - A MASTERCLASS IN COMEDY

Wednesday 2 October 2019,  4.00pm - 7.00pm
Venue: Performing Arts Centre

Richard Gauntlett is one of the country’s most versatile performers working as a director, writer, comedian, actor and
compère. His experience includes leading roles in West End shows such as BarnumBeauty and the Beast and the Lion King. He writes and directs major pantomimes, has had spells in Doctor Who and makes regular appearances at The City Varieties in Leeds. He is also a member of The Grand Order of Water Rats which is the country’s leading charitable fraternity of comedians, actors and writers. Richard will work with our pupils on writing short comedy scenes, such as
those found in pantomime and the skillset required to perform them. The afternoon should be extremely entertaining.

LEATHERHEAD YOUTH PROJECT GALA EVENING

Saturday 5 October 2019, 6.30pm - 10.00pm
Venue: Dining Room

We are delighted to host the third annual LYP Gala Evening, in support of young people throughout Leatherhead, Bookham and Mole Valley.  You'll experience an incredible evening where guests can wine and dine and enjoy the entertainment provided. The evening will begin with a drinks reception in the beautiful green surroundings of St John's School. This will be followed by a delicious three course steak dinner with a cheese board for you to indulge in. You will be able to enjoy the sound of a pianist throughout the evening, brilliant entertainment, raffle and an exciting auction. We look forward to welcoming you to what will no doubt be a highlight of the calendar year.

CONCERTO COMPETITION 

Monday 14 October 2019, 7.00pm - 8.30pm.
Venue: Old Chapel

St John’s prestigious annual competition sees pupils compete for the coveted Concerto Cup. Every pupil entered performs one movement from a well known concerto, accompanied by a professional orchestra. This is a fantastic opportunity to experience first-rate musicianship from the entrants. This year it is adjudicated by Mr Tommy Foster,
Head of Instrumental Studies and Assistant Director of Music at Eton College.

LEATHERHEAD ART CLUB AUTUMN EXHIBITION

Saturday 19 October - Sunday 27 October 2019
Open daily from 10.00am - 4.00pm, with a late night opening on Thursday 24 October until 7.00pm

Free Admission

The talented members of Leatherhead Art Club, in association with the Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival, will again exhibit their recent and original artwork.  The club is an inclusive group of artists ranging from established members whose work is often exhibited at the Mall Galleries or The Menier Gallery in London, through to newer members who come together to inspire each other and paint. Many members have also won competitions both locally and nationally for their paintings. Framed and unframed paintings, together with artist greetings cards, will be available for sale in a variety of styles and media.

MASTERCLASS FOR PIANISTS WITH GARETH OWEN

St John’s welcomes Gareth Owen, Head of Piano at Eton College and Piano Teacher at the Guildhall School of Music
and Drama, who will work with our talented pianists. You are cordially invited to attend part or all of the class to watch Gareth inspire and encourage our pupils.

MICHAELMAS CONCERT - A MISCELLANY OF MUSICAL MINIATURES

Tuesday 26 November 2019, 7.00pm - 8.00pm
Venue: Old Chapel

St John’s Schola Cantorum, Sinfonia, Brass Group and Lower School Choir explore the miniatures of Percy Grainger, John Foulds and Edward Elgar. The evening culminates with the combined forces of the Chapel Choir and St John’s Choral Society accompanied by a chamber ensemble of pupils giving a performance of John Rutter’s ethereal Requiem.

SENIOR SCHOOL PLAY

Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 December 2019, 7.30pm - 10.00pm

Christmas is fast approaching and so is the hour for Dr David Mortimer to deliver the world famous Ponsonby
Lecture for Neurologists – except everything gets in his way. The Performing Arts Department turn to the genre of pure theatrical farce for an evening of slapstick, mistaken identities and huge laughs. It Runs in The Family ran for several successful years in the West End and with its cast of doctors, matrons and sisters and an unwelcome blast from the past. It guarantees to be an evening that requires medical attention after several split sides.

CHRISTMAS ROCK CONCERT

The hugely popular annual event that truly gets St John’s ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’. The budding stars of
