St John’s is a school with a long tradition of benefaction, dating back to our foundation in 1851 as a charity school to provide an education for the ‘sons of the poor clergy’. It was the only school in England to do so completely free of charge at the time and we are proud that the tradition of providing Foundationer bursaries for the children of clergy of limited means continues to this day.

More than 4,000 families have received financial help to attend St John’s throughout our history.  In 2010 the scope of the School’s fundraising was broadened to provide support for all of the School’s charitable and community projects and a new bursary, known as the Albany Award, was introduced to provide funding for children from low-income backgrounds. We are committed to honouring the founding principles of our school by widening access to ensure that pupils who would benefit from a St John’s education are able to join us irrespective of their family’s financial circumstances.

St John’s is enormously grateful for the financial support, involvement and charitable giving it receives from parents past and present, OJs, staff and friends to carry out its important work. In recent years, funding has been directed towards bursary places and to specific capital projects which have included the restoration of the Old Chapel, the renovation of the War memorial, equipment for the new Science Centre, a bespoke organ for the Chapel and refurbishment of the cricket pavilion. We also issued a School Bond which has provided funding towards the development of new sports facilities including a state-of-the-art swimming pool. These capital projects deliver benefits to our pupils and also, in many instances, enable us to create opportunities for the wider community to have access to our facilities for a variety of activities and uses.

From legacies and major donors to regular giving and small gifts, when we come together as a community we can make an enormous difference. If you would like more information about fundraising priorities or would like to discuss how you can support us please get in touch.
