Celebrating European Languages

To celebrate European Languages Week from Monday 27 September, our Modern Foreign Languages Department arranged an array of exciting challenges and themed events.

Pupils were encouraged to take part in a number of challenges, including the European Bake-Off, DuoLingo Competition and Pokemon LinGo! Alongside these challenges, pupils and staff enjoyed a week of themed international lunches, including Portuguese and Italian!

The DuoLingo Competition saw pupils of all ages compete to gain the most ‘XP’ points on DuoLingo across the week, learning any language of their choice. It was brilliant to see pupils enthusiastically leaning new languages, as well as consolidating the ones they have already been learning. Lower School pupils had fantastic fun finding hidden Pokémon’s across the School, during the Pokemon LinGo competition. Pupils recorded their finds and had to put their language skills to the test to translate hidden messages.

The European Bake-Off competition was a real highlight, and saw great involvement from across all year groups. To take part, pupils had to bake something which celebrated a European country – be that by decorating it to visually represent the country, or by executing an original European recipe!

Whilst the Bake-Off began during European Languages Week, the incredible amount of entries meant the competition went into a second round. The quality of the bakes were outstanding, and the creativity and talents on display were fantastic. The European Bake-Off Final was a delightful culmination of final brilliant bakes – both sweet and savoury, filling the judging room with the most fantastic scent!

As the judging took place, it was clear that a real degree of effort and thought had gone into the amazing creations and this made the task of choosing the winners very difficult. Staff were very proud to see the display of baked goods, which celebrated languages and cultures all over Europe. Ultimately, the winners were chosen after lots of tasting and deliberation.
