Schedule of Fees 2018-2019

Registration Fee and Deposits

Applicants will be considered as candidates for admission and entry to the School when the registration form has been completed and returned and the relevant non-returnable registration fee has been paid.

Once the entry criteria have been met, an offer of a place at the School is accepted by return of the acceptance form, agreeing to the terms and conditions stated in the Parent Contract, and payment of deposits.

A Fee Deposit and a Deposit will be payable upon acceptance of a place.  The Fee Deposit will be credited against the first term's fees when a child joins the School. The Deposit will be retained by the School and credited without interest against the final invoice or other sums due on a child's leaving.

Tuition fees for all pupils cover normal curriculum tuition and lunches in School.

Boarding Fees

Lower School weekly boarding (Monday to Thursday)

£1,710 per term

Senior School weekly boarding (Sunday to Thursday) £2,135 per term

Pre-paid flexi-boarding (2 consecutive nights per week)

£55 per night

Pre-paid flexi-boarding (1 night per week) £58 per night
Ad-hoc boarding £61 per night


Boarding fees cover breakfast and an evening meal (with the exception of Sunday), overnight accommodation and bed linen. 

Weekly boarding

There is no boarding provision on Friday or Saturday for Senior School pupils and, in the case of Lower School pupils, there is no provision on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.  A pupil will be allocated a designated bed space or room for the duration of their stay each term and laundry services will be provided.


Overnight stays in one of the boarding houses are subject to availability.  Senior School pupils have the option of boarding any evening except Friday and Saturday and Lower School pupils have the option to board from Monday to Thursday.  A different bed space or room may be allocated upon each stopover and personal items may not be stored when a pupil is not boarding.  Regular flexi-boarding may be booked and paid termly in advance at discounted rates.  Pre-payment for 1 night is for a set night each week and pre-payment for 2 nights is for set consecutive nights. 

Ad-hoc boarding

Ad-hoc boarding occurs at short-notice, is not pre-paid and is subject to availability. 

Arrangements are made directly with the Housemaster or Housemistress for ad-hoc and flexi-boarding.

Additional Expenses

Items such as those listed below are invoiced on the termly invoice as they arise:

  • Examination fees
  • Additional trips and visits
  • Stationery and magazine subscriptions
  • Lost textbooks

The School operates a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) scheme and pupils are required to purchase laptops or tablets with certain specifications.  Further details about the scheme are available upon request.

Optional Additional Expenses

  • Learning development/dyslexia tuition £320 per term (based on 10 lessons per term)
  • English as an additional language £225 per term (based on 10 lessons per term)
  • St John’s Parents' Association £15 (one-off payment)
  • Membership of ISCO approximately £62 per term for Upper Fifth pupils (Independent Schools Careers Organisation) 
  • Voluntary activities that are organised by various members of staff; charges depend on the activity e.g. concert, theatre trip and outdoor expedition
  • Daily transport services to and from the School
  • School Fees Refund Scheme providing some reimbursement of fees for absence owing to illness. Termly premium is 1.37%* of fees
  • Personal Effects Insurance: £8.57* per term

*subject to any change to Insurance Premium Tax

Medical and Insurance Cover

All pupils are included in a personal accident insurance scheme which includes some dental cover. There is no additional charge for this cover.

Please contact the Finance Office for further details on how to make a claim. 

The insurance policies of the School do not cover loss of pupils’ belongings. Parents’ householders’ comprehensive or all-risks policies should be suitably extended to give adequate cover. Alternatively, the School has arranged access to a pupils’ personal effects insurance scheme. Cover can be provided by payment of a termly premium. All fees are reviewed annually and are usually announced at the end of the Spring Term for the following academic year.

Bursarial Assistance

St John's is committed to ensure the School is accessible to all families, regardless of their ability to pay.  Fee reductions are available for children of Anglican clergy (Foundationers).  In addition, means-tested financial support towards tuition fees is available to low income families and in some cases may provide a free place.  All applications are subject to annual means-testing and are assessed via completion of a confidential statement of financial circumstances.

Payment of Fees

Fees are payable by bank transfer on or before the first day of each term.  The School also operates a direct debit scheme spreading the cost of each termly invoice over three months.

Other Payment Options

The School operates a scheme which gives a saving to those who pay a capital sum in advance towards their child’s fees. For further details please contact the Finance Office.

The School accepts childcare vouchers for boarding services only. For further details please contact the Finance Office.

School Fees Refund Scheme

The School Fees Refund Scheme enables parents to apply for a refund of fees following a pupil’s absence through illness or injury. Fees will be refunded for each period of absence from the School of more than eight days for a weekly boarder and five days for a day pupil. Cover is provided by payment of a termly premium.
