"I was a Foundationer at St John's in the 1960s and I
am so grateful for all the school offered and gave me. Now,
I have had two daughters at the school. Like my parents before
me, without the Foundation's help, we could not have begun
to consider sending them to St John's. Both have received
so much and been given an education within a school that includes
a firm Christian ethos, high standards of pastoral care and
an excellent academic record. We are all grateful to the generosity
of others in the past."
"St John's gives you the opportunity to find out what
you are good at, and then excel at. I was only at St John's
for the Sixth Form but I have made friendships that I know
will last for a long time to come."
"After
St John's, I joined the Army in 1945 and then went to Sandhurst
for the first regular intake after the war. I soldiered for
twelve years in the UK, Malaya and Hong Kong before taking
redundancy terms in 1960 and becoming a prep school master.
I married my wife in 1957 and we had two sons. We attended
the St John's 150th Anniversary celebrations and were very
impressed. I am most grateful to St John's for the start it
gave me."
"I
was very fortunate to be at St John's in the 1930s which enabled
me to go on to Christ's College, Cambridge. I then went to
Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, for a year or so before ordination.
I had curacies in Surbiton, Loughborough and finally St Peter's,
Eaton Square, before becoming the Vicar of St Saviour's, Walton
Street, Chelsea. I have now been retired for more than ten
years."
"At school I specialised in science and particularly
biology. It was then that I formed my abiding interest in
the countryside. I think that the most important things I
learnt at St John's were how to face up to daunting characters
and how to adapt to difficult circumstances. These have stood
me in good stead throughout my life."
"My housemaster made me feel right at home when I arrived
at St John's. I made some good friends in my first term, which
helped me settle in much quicker than I thought I would."
"I
would never have had the experiences that I had if St John's,
and more importantly the Foundation, had not existed."
