Careers Education & Guidance

Fourth Form
Tutorial sessions will concentrate on self-development and, in addition, all pupils will complete a careers guidance programme during the year in small groups. Pupils will complete a questionnaire about possible careers, based on their interests and aptitudes, and follow this up by researching careers using the facilities in the Careers room. All pupils will also receive a booklet containing information sheets about career paths they have selected.

Lower Fifth Form
Tutorial sessions continue, looking at Action Planning and the World of Work. Those with career aspirations will be encouraged to develop them, even at this early stage, through work related experience.

Upper Fifth Form
Tutorial sessions continue looking at the World of Work, but the main focus of this year is the Morrisby Test that is undertaken within the first two weeks of September. The resulting report is then discussed with a member of the ISCO staff and is then sent to parents before Christmas. Any discussion arising from this can be done at the Upper Fifth Parents' Evening, in January, when a member of the ISCO staff is present. The guidelines for possible future careers should be useful in the choice of AS levels. Finally, all pupils are eligible to go on ISCO career courses.

Lower Sixth Form
Tutorial sessions continue looking at career paths, compiling a CV and progressing with guidance to a related work experience. At the same time, tutors will go through various exercises designed to help pupils with understanding the process of applying to university. Just before Christmas all pupils will complete a questionnaire that will offer them suggested university courses given their interests and academic preferences. In January, there is a Careers Convention. In June, all pupils will take part in a UCAS day where they will be registered with UCAS online and hear talks by a university Admissions Tutor. In addition there will be a talk on Gap year activities and they will be encouraged to write their personal statement.

Upper Sixth Form
When pupils return in September, priority must be given to completing their UCAS application. For medical and dentistry students and those doing Oxbridge, this must be completed by the beginning of October. For all other students, we aim to complete by Half Term although the official closing date is in January.
