The Christian foundation of St John’s continues to shape the day-to-day life of the School. The Christian faith on which the School was founded remains the guiding principle for our collective moral and spiritual life. The School welcomes pupils of all faiths and beliefs and seeks to offer an environment which will nurture its pupils on their spiritual journeys. To this end, all pupils are expected to attend Chapel during the week and on Sunday evenings, when their House is scheduled to attend.
The Chapel is situated at the heart of the School and School worship is held at the start of the School day. On Monday the Headmaster leads his assembly; on Tuesday the Chaplain leads worship; on Thursday, Chapel is led by a member of staff and on Friday the various Houses take it in turn to lead or there is Congregational (singing) practice with the Director of Music. On Sundays, Houses take it in turns to attend Chapel for the evening service to which parents and visitors are warmly welcome to attend. After the service, Houses offer refreshments and the opportunity to meet staff and other parents socially. Details of Sunday services are in the School calendar.
Each year the Chaplain offers a course of confirmation preparation for those seeking to be confirmed. The Bishop of Guildford or Dorking preside at the Confirmation Service in the Summer term.
On Wednesday evenings at 5.30pm, as listed in the School calendar, there is a voluntary service of the Eucharist held in the Undercroft Chapel. The Undercroft Chapel is situated beneath the main Chapel and offers a space for quiet prayer and reflection. It is dedicated to the memory of Father Vivian Redlich, an Old Johnian who was martyred during the Second World War in Papua New Guinea. Both chapels are open throughout the day.
