St John's Rugby Tour of Australia 2010

St John’s Rugby Tour to Australia sees 27 boys guided by 3 coaches compete in five matches over 19 days, from Sunday 18 July to Thursday 5 August. Between the matches the team, as well as training, will get the opportunity to see some famous Australian sights including Sydney Harbour and the Great Barrier Reef, enjoy Australian hospitality with both their opponents and their hosts and, hopefully, find time to provide regular updates that will be featured here.

Week 2 Image Gallery

The second week on tour saw three more wins to clinch a 100% record. Between the rugby the boys surfed and snorkelled then left Australia with some amazing memories both on and off the pitch - a Great Tour!

100% record - Final match 67-0 win - Tuesday 3 August

Match day, but first some R&R in the morning. The boys had the morning free to do as they pleased. Some took a cab into Cairns city centre for a little shopping and a bite to eat; others just took the opportunity for a lie in. We assembled at 2:00pm to head off for our last fixture against Trinity Anglican School.

Thankfully the game started at 4pm as the heat of the day subsided. The game began as all our encounters in Australia have - tough and physical and it was clear the opposition were prepared to take the game to us. After an initial phase absorbing pressure St John’s were finally able to get their hands on the ball. Some good work at the rucks by the forwards and slick handling led to the first of many tries. An 11 try fest for the visiting team saw us emerge 67-0.

But it was not always one way traffic and our opponents made some desperate attempts to cross our line. A brilliant tackle by Jake Luscombe held the opposition up over the line. Ed Mac was brilliant leading the line and I hope the junior players have learnt from his example. He was immense today and led the side brilliantly as he has done all tour. A fine send-off to his playing career at St John’s.

Well done to the team on winning five out of five. A great effort. Tomorrow is our last day in Australia - a little R&R in the morning and then we head off to Hong Kong and on to London to enjoy the rest of our summer break.

Great Barrier Reef - Snorkelling with Sharks - Monday 2 August

Again an early start to the day with 6:30 wake up calls, but it is going to be worth the effort. A short coach ride to the pier and we begin our ocean adventure. A fairly rough ride out to the reef saw a number of boys taking refuge in white paper bags.

We arrive at Moore’s Reef, a truly spectacular part of the reef. The boys needed no second invitation to kit up and start snorkelling. A guided tour for all the boys snorkelling on the outer reef was surely a memorable experience, as was the sighting of a reef shark while on the trip.

Lots of Sun, Sea but thankfully no A&E and we pulled anchor and headed back to the safety of Cairns Harbour under a magnificent sunset.

A BBQ cooked by the coaches around the swimming pool capped off an awesome day, one that will be remembered for years to come.

Fourth win - 31-17 v The Cathedral School - Saturday 31 July pm

The game was a tough physical affair and The Cathedral School clearly had some speed out wide. No quarter asked or given was the motto for today’s game and St John’s were clearly up for this type of encounter. Gareth Powlson scored a well worked try in the first ten minutes and the conversion was promptly knock over by Eliiot Davies. But this is where it stayed for a large part of the first half.

Our opponents replied just before half time leaving the score at 7-5. We began the second half at a frantic pace and scored two excellent tries early in the second half. Davies converted both and we lead 21-5.

Our opponents throw everything, including the kitchen sink, at us and were finally rewarded with a second try. The score was now 21-5. A penalty took the score out to 24-12. Another try from our hosts 8 minutes from time set up a tense finale. With the score at 24-17. We pressed hard up the field and Elliot Davies took a well taken try and conversion to seal the victory 31-17. Definitely Elliot’s best game on tour, contributing 16 individual points. We enjoyed a hard fought win and now look forward to our final few days in Cairns.

Townsville is hot - Saturday 31 July am

I can officially say that it is hot this morning. A late start to the day and then a little morning sight seeing in and around Townsville. From the spectacular views from the top of Castle Rock to walking The Strand on the beach front  - this is really a town with a lot of charm.

We headed off to our 2pm kick off which I think is a cunning plan by our hosts as it was definitely not getting any cooler as the day went on.

Fog delays - Friday 30 July

A long day of travelling lay ahead. We left Surfers Paradise at 8:45am for our coach trip to Brisbane Airport. Upon arrival at the airport fog all over the eastern coast of Australia had already played havoc with flight schedules for the morning. Our flight was delayed by just over an hour and so we had to hang  around the airport, a skill we perfected in our six hour stop over in Hong Kong. A short two hour flight to Townsville and we finally arrived. At last it is warm and there is no rain. From the airport we take a short drive through Townsville to meet our hosts.

3 matches 3 wins - 57-0 v All Saints - Thursday 29 July pm

St John’s played some fine rugby today against All Saints Anglican School and achieved a good result. The final score of 57-0 does not truly reflect the physicality of the game. St John’s were ruthless in attack and after several periods of good build up play were able to round off with some well taken tries.

But this was by no means an easy victory as we were made to work for every yard and point on the field. Some tough tackling ensured we were able to turn over opposition attacks on several occasions. Iain Sexton had a very solid game at scrum half and rounded this off with a fine try late on in the game.

Harry Morrison had a great game, turning over the opposition’s possession several times and it was good to see all the younger guys on the team step forward and play with confidence.

Today’s result has allowed us to gather some good momentum as we head to our final two fixtures in Townsville and Cairns.

Bowling and the view from the 77th floor - Thursday 29 July am

It is still raining this morning but the forecast is set to clear up. A trip to the local mall and a game of team bowling clearly showed which boys spend too much time in bowling alleys.

From here we headed off to the Q Deck - one of the highest apartment blocks in the world with 77 floors. The observation deck gave some simply stunning views of the Gold Coast, even through the cloudy weather - the picture shows the view in better weather!

Surfing in the rain - Wednesday 28 July

We woke up to the most appalling weather. Persistent showers were the order of the day. A late start to the morning and we were heading for our surfing lesson at the nearby surfing spot of Burley Heads.

We were going to get wet anyway so the rain was not going to put us off. A great morning was had by all.

It was clear there are those that can surf and those that never will, but everybody gave it their best shot before Mr Platt demonstrated how it should be done (below right, picture supplied by Mr Platt!)

The rain continued to pelt down all afternoon and as we headed to our hosts it was clear we might be playing water polo rather than rugby against them. Upon arrival at All Saints College the fields were clearly under water. In fact it looked like a series of lakes. The boys met their hosts for the evening and headed off.

Coolangatta - Jelly Fish and Prawn Crackers - Tuesday 27 July

An early departure from Sydney to Coolangatta and then a short trip from the airport to the seaside area of Surfers Paradise.

The afternoon was spent at leisure and then we gathered down on the beach to run out yesterday evening’s cobwebs. 5km on a beautiful beach is never a hard task and even the sight of a large jelly fish could not put the boys off. The evening ended with a great team meal at the local Chinese restaurant.
