Examinations and Results

At St John’s a broad range of subjects are examined at both GCSE and GCE level, with some departments offering IGCSEs. In addition to the traditional examinations that are offered at A Level, some of our pupils also pursue the Extended Project Qualification. Historically, the majority of the exams in all subjects are taken in the summer series, with a few exams taken in November.

GCSE results 2016

Our Upper Fifth pupils had an incredibly busy and successful year. Excellent GCSE results have been the icing on the cake for quite an exceptional and hardworking year group.

Just under 30% of all grades were awarded at A* and nearly 66% were awarded at A* or A making these results the second strongest set of GCSE grades in the School’s history.

Pupils excelled across all subjects; in the core subjects of English language, mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics 37% of the grades awarded were at A*.

There were very many exceptional individual performances this year. A quarter of the year group achieved five A* grades or better and 18 pupils were awarded eight or more A* grades. Special congratulations go to Jemima Clemett, Finlay Deuchar, Anna Graham, Jessica Laslett, Yvette Murphy and Harry Robinson who all achieved 10 A* grades.

Catherine Perkins fully justified the award of Upper Fifth Dux of Year at Speech Day in June by achieving 11 A* grades.

From musical accomplishment to sporting triumph, the St John’s Upper Fifth have been a strong and dedicated year group, and an asset to the School. We look forward to seeing what they can accomplish during their Sixth Form years and beyond.

A Level results 2016

Sixth Form pupils at St John’s School celebrated strong A level results this year. Over 80% of all A level examinations taken were awarded at A*- B, and 50% were awarded at A* or A.

With over a quarter of the year group achieving straight A*/A grades it is unsurprising that there were so many outstanding individual performances. Two pupils, Anna MacDonald and Charlie Hardwick, gained three A* grades, with Charlie also securing another A grade to add to his remarkable achievement.

In addition, 10 pupils (Angus King, Isaac Lea, Lois Graham, Elizabeth Vogel, Harry Witt, Sophie Evans, Harriet Lee, Sam Olsen, Matthew Clancy and Greg Tilsar) were awarded two A* grades and at least one A grade. Katie Stuart and Mimi Rothwell both achieved two A* grades.

A considerable majority of the School’s Upper Sixth pupils have secured a place at their first choice university, many of which count amongst the best in the country. Such strong performances are a testament to the tremendous effort of both pupils and staff.
