My St John's

Music

Introduction

Head of Department: Mr Nicholas Smith, NSmith@stjohns.surrey.sch.uk

St John’s is well known for the excellence of its music making. It has an increasingly enviable and unique reputation as a place which inspires music at all levels for all pupils of all disciplines. Music at St John’s is for everyone, and we pride ourselves on the inclusive nature of the Department which encourages all pupils to participate through congregational singing, house music competitions and the numerous concerts that take place throughout the year.

We cater for beginner and specialist. Many pupils wish to receive individual instrumental lessons and specialist coaching from our team of outstanding, enthusiastic and dedicated visiting music staff, who maintain their own professional careers. Ensembles are strong: choral singing is at the heart of school life, from the 70-strong Chapel choir to the sparkling Schola Cantorum, and the numerous instrumental ensembles.

St John’s invests a great deal of time into nurturing its scholars through its Music, Choral and Organ Scholarship schemes. The scholars drive the School’s music into the public forum, performing to a variety of audiences in numerous locations nationally and internationally.

The Department boasts some of the finest facilities around, including the Old Chapel, an extraordinary new concert venue and recital hall, as well as the purpose-built Performing Arts Centre which has also recently been expanded and updated.

The fact that many of our leavers study music at university (including Oxbridge), conservatoire and beyond, is testimony to the positive impact that music has on our pupils, encouraging them to make music wherever they go.
